This will never not be fun to play. It's too bad that the PCE version is Japanese only but the text boxes and layout are a 1:1 to the SNES/Gen US versions so it shouldn't be hard to play if you know the game... and it also should be easy to translate it. I should try and remember to grab some of these Koei strategy games at some point. I love NHK Taiga Drama Taiheiki mostly because its's fairly easy once you get round the Japanese text so I hope those Koei games will have similar gameplay. and then there is Tokimeki Memorial which I just adore. shameless plug but I've been getting used to DaVinci and even after a 100+ videos I'm still learning stuff put a few gameplay samples up on YT mostly to show pc engine using fake scaliness and mixing the audio

I've read about this but never played it. It'll be something that I'll keep my out on.
Another game is MOMOTARŌ KATSUGEKI 桃太郎活劇. Many know this as the one Momotaro game that Westerners can play with it's Wonder Boy-esque game play. I really do hope that a fan translation gets released, unless one did and I missed it.
I love those two also. Exodus mentioned Blood Gear which I agree is so awesome it’s just bizarre that it’s so rarely talked about. I could argue it’s a top 10 PCE game, it’s by Hudson, it’s easy to play in Japanese, almost never gets mentioned.

I would love to see a western-accessible Momotaro game.

I guess, since our little Japanese HuCard Platformer poll, I can confidently say i enjoy Makai Prince Dorabocchan (the Spike McFang platformer) quit a lot. Nothing flashy about the graphics or music, really, it's just a damn good platformer, imo.
Same goes for Dorabian Night CD (way better than the HuCard version, it would seem). Just some good 2D platforming action to be had.

I second Blood Gear. That's one that deserves the English translation treatment for sure.

Blood gear is tricky iirc don't the dungeon maps randomly generate for individual playthroughs ? Graphics are nice and I do wish more levels had layered scrolling especially coming out much later on in the pce's life.
I was trying to follow a guide while playing this but I got to a map and a boss I just couldn't defeat and my play through just didn't tally with the guide I was using at that time so I gave up

I bailed on it about half way through some years ago. I think I was just at a grinding point and I didn’t want to grind a CD-R (which was all I had of BG at the time).

I didn't get the impression that they were randomly generated... I only got about halfway through myself, but that due to other factors!

I always really liked the Japan-only Xevious sequel. It's the only one that really gets what made the original such a good shooter when it came out.

Blood Gear is non-linear, but I believe that the map layouts are the same.

I always really liked the Japan-only Xevious sequel. It's the only one that really gets what made the original such a good shooter when it came out. Some of the music tracks in that game are hidden gems! The same guy (Toshiaki Sakoda, one of my all time favorite VGM composers) who did the music for Devil's Crush and M.U.S.H.A., also created the music for Xevious Fardraut!

(gigantic picture of "Nobunaga no Yabou Zenkoku Ban" removed) This will never not be fun to play. Punch, doesn't this game require Memory Base 128 to save in-between plays ? I was just wondering whether you use one, as the game looks like it's not a one-day play-through.

A game not mentioned often is the mini-game called ‘ Daikon Cut’ that was included in the Art of Fighting game. I remember enjoying that a bit.
Passage from the PCE Software Bible: MINI-GAME: Put in a non-Arcade Card to bring up the opening sequence, reset the machine with SELECT+RUN, and repeat. After the third time, the 'Daikon Cut' mini-game will appear.
