Despite the shit-storm of the past year, I know PCEFX was a special place for many of us. In fact, I'd wager that the fact it was so special to so many of us is why said shit-storm was so dramatic. But, shit-storm aside, I thought it might be nice to talk about our good PCEFX memories, the stuff we'll miss, the people we met, etc. PCEFX was one of the first places I found on the internet, waaaaay back. I was still in love with my Turbo stuff, and wanted to find out more information. A quick Google (Yahoo back then, maybe?) search led me to PCEFX. I used to love Aaron's video features, the ones that made my beloved Turbo games look so damn sexy. He used to have articles, and the odd review as well. I thought it was unusual that he was so into the PC-FX, and it was his videos and archives that piqued my interest enough to import a boxed PC-FX and a handful of games for $100. Not bad! Anyway, I was a lurker on the forums for a while before finally signing up. It was the first forum I ever signed up for, and I fucked up the username and wound up getting stuck with "jlued686", which was my college email address. Took me years to get that fixed! (Thanks Necro!) Anyway, once I signed up, it took me a while to start posting on a regular basis. I was impressed by how much more people knew about the Turbo/PCE stuff than I did so I was apprehensive to join the conversations, fearing to come off like a n00b. I started by posting news links that were relevant to the Turbo stuff. News about remakes or updates to Turbo games, news about developers who had created some of our favorite games, Virtual Console releases, etc. Slowly but surely I worked my way in. I butted heads with people, from time to time, as was natural on that site. I remember Necromancer called down the thunder on me once after a misunderstanding, and that still makes me laugh to this day. I apparently enraged one user so much that he sent me the most mind-meltingly over-the-top PM I had ever received. It was so nuts that I still have a screenshot of it to this day and every time I see it I chuckle a bit. ("So there!" ) But I learned a ton from that site. I was able to replace a CD lens for my Duo, and I used one of the cap charts to do a sound fix on a Duo with my son, which was one of his first projects when he was 8-9 years old. I met a lot of cool people, and met Keranu in real life at MGC almost ten years ago. I believe we played some Dungeon Explorer at my booth together. My favorite PCEFX memory, however, came shortly after last year's shit-storm. A bunch of refugees were chatting in the Discord room and one of them posted a Craigslist ad that originated about ten minutes from my childhood hometown, a tiny town in the middle of Wisconsin. I quickly discovered that _jash was not only from my hometown, but grew up minutes from me and knew many of the same people I grew up with or was friends with. The odds of that were incredibly slim! In the time since, Jash and I have hung out a bunch, had beers together, and played games together. All because of the connection we had to PCEFX. The implosion of PCEFX and the resulting closure was probably the most surreal online experience I've ever had; so much craziness and drama. But I learned a lot from it, too. I learned to appreciate a good community of folks who have common interests. I learned that, despite differences, simply talking shit about old, relatively-obscure games can bridge the gaps. It's the site that I visited the longest and most frequently. There were some crazy-ass people there, and the conversations had in Fighting Street could be used in a sociological study. But damn...I'm gonna miss the good old days of that place.

I joined like 8 years ago. It was such a rush to be able to learn so much about my favourite console, it's almost sad that you can only experience that once.

I fell in love with the Turbo back in the early 90s. It was my first console that I bought and owned and didn't have to share, like the 2600 or Colecovision we had in the house. I bought for it, eventually got the CD-ROM unit, Super System Card, one of Dave's Kisado adapters (purchased directly from him) and an Arcade Card, and a copy of Rondo of Blood that I bought in Japan in 1995 on a school trip. I was an active member of BT Garner's Turbo List at the time and I loved the sense of community there. And then, summer of '97, I traded everything to someone on the list for a Saturn and a bunch of games.
I still had a little warm place in my heart for the Turbo, however, so when I finally graduated college and was out on my own I joined PC Engine FX in search for the same kind of community that the Turbo List had. What I found was different, but still good, at least at the time. There were a bunch of Turbo List expats, including, occasionally, BT himself, and Dave, and others. There were some very knowledgeable and gracious folks on PC Engine FX, and I will be forever grateful for the knowledge they shared. But I always had some concern for a certain level of dickishness that seemed to be constantly simmering under the surface, and rose to the surface in recent years. As forums everywhere lost users and fell into decline, so too did PCEFX. The truth is, as much as I miss the PCEFX forums, the closure was long-overdue. So many old faces had already moved on, and despite a lot of great conversations and projects, there was too much drama and vitriol, and a lot of cliqueishness. Aaron himself, we now know, was going through some shit, and with most of his mod team MIA, I felt like things were becoming less friendly and more combative. As such it took a nuclear meltdown at the hands of our own little Kim Jong Un to sign the death certificate that some of us suspected, deep down, was long in coming.
I'm proud of Paul for stepping up and creating this place. It's not PCEFX, and I don't think it should try to be. PCEFX was a product of its time, and that time is gone. I want to remember the good times of PCEFX, and not the end time. I want to remember that time of transition where the old Turbo Listers and the new forumites were mingling and exchanging ideas. It was like this grand hand-off of a legacy. And PCEFX carried that legacy proudly and well for a time. I would rather remember it at its best than see it continue to limp along under the weight of neglect, past its prime.
I also think it's been great here, because I have discovered folks I didn't interact as much with at PCEFX. There are lots of newer faces I didn't appreciate there because of all the drama. And now, here, those no-longer-so-new faces can flourish in a new space, without the Drama Llama weighing them down. And I can finally discover how awesome so many of you are to chat and post with in a way I didn't appreciate before.

There were a bunch of Turbo List expats, including, occasionally, BT himself, and Dave, and others. Same here, List-serv to PCFX...I think the SS/PS1 was released in between my cross over and I had a little obey falling out but I never sold off my turbob, it just got a little dusty. SS was to me the new turbo. I also think it's been great here, because I have discovered folks I didn't interact as much with at PCEFX. On the old BBS days, a good argument always increased traffic. But even back then, we did in-person meetups so I would never get to heated b/c I knew I'd meet these avatars in person at some point. I always try to keep that in mind rather than be a keyboard warrior, safe in my mommys basement. I think the best part of PCFX was meeting fellow obeyers at shows like MGC and AVGC. I'm fortunate to have the ability to travel for gaming, and getting up with forum members is always a highlight. I'm still having issues with this forum software...I'd really like to have a "show unread posts" like other forums but I'm sure I'll figure it out here. I just hope I do not miss a good conversation!

Meetups yo!! Since the first time I met Keranu and Guy in 2003 at MGC to nowadays with our meetups at MGC and VGS/OcTurboFest!! <3

Thankfully, I can still find the friends I made via PCEFX here and around. However, I will always remember this moment. My favorite meme to come out of the last days of PCEFX!!

Wow, I read the first 3 pages of that, and the final page. Amazing. After Thibault's admission, about the only sensible response was the final one, closing the thread. I feel (and I hope I am correct about this), that a mud-slinging contest like that could not happen here.

I was only a member there for a few months but I did lurk before that, anyway was interested in C programming so started to ask some questions which were answered by other programmers.Because of the helpfulness of those gentlemen I began to learn C and then nightwolf started banning developers .I still continued to learn C but it was because of them and their willingness to answer questions when I first began. With that said my memories of pcfx(or how I viewed the community there) are very good.
If any of the gentlemen stop by these forums,I went from this..
BalloonExploding() { BalloonFrameTimer++; if (BalloonFrameTimer == 15) { BalloonFrameTimer = 0; BalloonFrameIndex++; } if (BalloonFrameIndex == 1) BalloonFrame = BalloonExplodingFrame1; if (BalloonFrameIndex == 2) BalloonFrame = BalloonExplodingFrame2; if (BalloonFrameIndex == 3) BalloonFrame = BalloonExplodingFrame3; if (BalloonFrameIndex == 4) BalloonFrame = BalloonExplodingFrame4; if (BalloonFrameIndex > 4) { BalloonState = 4; BalloonColorPal = BPal; } }
To this...
// ----------------------------------------------------------------------- // typedef struct { int leftshapenum, rightshapenum; enum {step, slide, think, stepthink, slidethink} progress; int skippable; int pushtofloor; int tictime; int xmove; int ymove; void (*think) (); void (*contact) (); void (*react) (); void *nextstate; } statetype; // ----------------------------------------------------------------------- // typedef struct { enum {no,yes, allways, removable} active; int needtoreact; int nothink; double x,y; int xdir, ydir; double xspeed; double yspeed; double groundxspeed; double gravity; int ticcount; int animate; statetype *state; int shapenum; int left, top, right, bottom; int midx; int tileleft, tiletop, tileright, tilebottom; int tilemidx; int hitnorth, hiteast, hitsouth, hitwest; int temp1,temp2,temp3,temp4; SDL_Rect tokisource; SDL_Rect tokidest; } objtype; // ----------------------------------------------------------------------- //

I joined about 8 years ago for repairs and mods. My consoles would probably be in the garbage if it wasn't for the great members and info.
Also miss the high score challenges and game of the week threads which were great motivator to play more Turbo. Fun times attempting to beat high scores and talking about the games.

My post in the "future" thread over there:
PCEFX was my homepage on the internet (literally) for almost 11 1/2 years...I have met some of the GREATEST friends (online and real life) ever. Honestly only people involved can understand the loss many of us are feeling.
I came to the site a relative noob (mostly drooling over the system bitd) I did have a TurboExpress, Neutopia 2, and Veigues: Tactical Gladiator, and was hooked. Like an idiot I sold it off when the system "died" but got back into it with a vengeance.
Fast forward to 2007 I stumble across this place and felt right at home. Of course we've had plenty of ashats, but by in large this has been some of the nicest people, sharing/caring about each other...and all forms of info about the greatest system of ALL time.
Hopefully there will be a way to continue, and rebuild the site (as many of us have thrown ideas out there of buying the site, etc.).
Thanks to Aaron for keeping it alive as long as he has, and to all those who have made it so much fun...the "tech guys" for the knowledge (I mean shit almost no one was fixing/modding systems when I joined), the translators, the homebrewers, the archivists who have saved so much info....and all the others that made this the best community I've been proud to be part of.
I'm hoping everyone has found their way to Pauls forum, discord, the Facebook groups (including the PCEFX Community page).
