An old question but a nice one to kick things off.
Mine was Gunhed, running at a demo booth in the local game shop. To be honest, I wasn't that interested at the time as I really didn't care for shoot 'em ups back then. But it looked arcade quality and the big lightning lasers were pretty impressive. The staff there were super excited about it though, they always were into the next big thing.
I didn't manage to have a play on it - I had to wait until PC Genjin for that and the rest is history...

I can't remember the first one that i saw running, but I distinctly remember seeing a picture of a GT running PC Genjin and thinking it was the best thing ever.
Never actually got to see a PC Engine in the flesh until the beginning of the 2000's. I am pretty sure I went to Raven Games and a bought a copy of PC Genjin as my first game, think I also got R-Type p1 too.
The game turned out to be as good as I had hoped it would be, and it's my fave platformer to this day.

It was pretty expensive, I think something like £40 or £60 at the time. Problem is the same day my friend talked me into using the level select cheat so it kinda made it less fun in the long term.

As for Splatterhouse, I recall that quite a few people recommended the game to me, but I never really liked the sprites or thought that the gameplay was particularly interesting. Although maybe I should try it again.

Although maybe I should try it again. The main sprite always appealed to me. The gameplay is good but I can see what you mean. I wish it had a few samples for sound effects to create a better feel of the arcade original (like some moans and the thwack! sound when you hit something).

I honestly think it was Keith Courage... but I hardly can remember. I have a vague memory of the original cheesy promotional video in Toys R Us.

It was Legendary Axe. It was in a TG16 kiosk at A&A records in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the fall of 1989. Freaked me out.

Before buying one, the only footage I saw was from the one of the first commercials. The footage of the legendary Axe final boss. It looked epic. Based on that I asked for one at Christmas. Marketing must have been so easy back then Lol

It was one of several, either Blazing Lazers, Dungeon Explorer or Legendary Axe. It's been so long I can't remember.
When I was really young we went to visit my older brother in the house where he was living (he's much older) and some how or another he had gotten hold of a Turbografx. I played Dungeon Explorer and Blazing Lazers and almost certainly Legendary Axe since I remembered it years later when I got it myself. Those games tripped me out so damn hard, the world view was so different from the games I had played on my Nintendo systems. I'll never forget that feeling.

The first time I ever heard of a PC Engine was the article about Strider coming to Supergrafx in Game Pro, I think it was. I saw the way they spelled "grafx" and said "Oh this must be Turbografx in Japan!" and I found other mentions of PC Engine here and there. The first time I saw a game running on one was my own first one, a regular first white model PCE, and the game was PC Denjin. So I wasn't really that impressed at first because I had rocked Air Zonk a lot on turbo.... soon after though, I got a Duo RX, and ROndo oF bLoOd! Which of course blew me away.

R-Type on a TG-16 at our base PX ( Post Exchange ) I was in the US Army and stationed in Germany in 1990 where NEC really pushed the TG 16. Every game and accessory was there for sale.
