Yes that's very nice! I didn't realize that Jungle Bros. got that far along. Keranu has lots of animated sprites.

It's awesome that you kept it,how complete is the version you have? If I remember right it's just one level. Yeah, just one level. I'd be seriously confused & excited if you had a build with a 2nd level! Why was it cancelled? I can't 100% remember. I think it had a lot to do with RL stuff going on with Nod/Rover, but my memory fails me. BT, do you remember why it was cancelled?

I should send Mathius my canceled/collecting dust projects for TG-16,maybe he can start collecting unfinished projects.

Keranu gave a few to me last time I saw him years ago. He's been MIA forever.
I also have the official MGC demo of Mysterious Song from 2012.

It was never officially cancelled. We ran into a memory ceiling, and lord_cack vanished. Black Tiger did up some high-resolution tilework for a PC conversion but we didn't really get too far with that. Real-life issues are par for the course for me, which is why I also tend to vanish from time to time. The project could easily be reborn with the PCE Yuki engine, though it'd still run into similar memory issues unless some cuts were made. Making a full-on PC version would be possible with little issue.

Memory issues primarily from unique tiles, presumably? Implement a compression routine, or redesign some of the levels.

No... too many sprite frames. Level maps rarely consume much space unless you're doing large, multi-scrolling areas, and HuC limits your unique tiles to 256, which is 0x4000 words, or 32KB of memory. Sprites consumed nearly half of the system RAM and it was not possible to just stuff them all into VRAM ahead of time like Lucretia does.

Sounds like a technical challenge: either cutting frames or using some kind of real-time compression routine

I have to say I really don't like the idea of targeting a platform like the PCE or the MD or SNES and then relying on Windows PC as the easy out when it proves your vision exceeds, if only just, your ability to implement on the original platform. Because then you get a game that's only a little bit better than it would have been has it been compromised on the original target platform. Better to scrap it and start over with Windows as the target, much like Paul did with Grelox.

If this were my decision I'd cut frames(ask the artist if need be) instead of trying to implement compression routines.Just for the fact that adding more work for myself will equal less time spent coding the actual game. This has been dormant for so long cutting out what's causing the problem would be the less time consuming in my opinion.

Compression doesn't have to be complicated. You can actually save memory just by using fewer colors, allowing access to more space-saving graphics formats.

If TheOldRover is not planning on continuing development on this perhaps you could take over/get involved spenoza,I'm sure others would enjoy having a new game release instead of it not being released at all.

I know a lot ABOUT programming, but I don't actually know programming. The real problem is that most homebrew devs aren't willing to do a lot of collaboration with other devs, and tend to want to do their own projects and not work with folks on someone else's. Like, if Rover and Arkhan and Elmer were capable of actually getting along for more than 5 minutes without becoming grumpy who knows what they would be capable of accomplishing. But besides project possessiveness and personal goals, programmers have different styles, and those work styles and programming styles aren't always compatible. It's tough to have more than one programmer on a hobbyist project, despite the potential benefits. Just too many hurdles to overcome.
