PT Cruiser has some of the worst fuel efficiency in its class. Definitely didn’t do much to offset truck emissions.

Yea it was a bit of a guzzler. My last bmw could get up to 80mpg on a good flat run at cruising speed. That was really something. Day to day use was about 55 average. My current Renault does 50 average 60 on good runs. Much better on the wallet.

PT Cruiser has some of the worst fuel efficiency in its class. Definitely didn’t do much to offset truck emissions. The PT Cruiser was classified as a light truck by the EPA so I’d imagine it had a massive affect on Chrysler’s CAFE. Most “light trucks” dont even get 20MPG. I’d imagine however that Federal hoodwinking occurred it probably was the difference between profitability and another bankruptcy. Build a pickup with massive margin on it, then basically give away a PT in order to make the net meet emissions, essentially. The drop top version was classified as a car, hilariously.

The PT Cruiser actually sold really well for a number of years. I'm sure they were building it at a profit, otherwise it would have broken them to sell so many at a loss. Too bad about how unreliable they were, though. You'd think they were European or Mitsubishi or something. But enough were made and the design never really changed so there are more than enough repair parts in the channel.
My current ride is a 2015 Honda CR-V, EX, AWD, blue. And I will drive it until it is dead, or at least until the extended 10 year warranty runs out. 2025, I'm looking at you!

It was sold at a profit, but not a conventional one. The profit is in the Durango or the 2500 Cummins pickup but on their own the company would flunk their CAFE.
It’s not rocket science. Virtually every car company does this, the big three are the most famous for it.
Back in the 80s a company like Toyota or Honda wouldn’t need to do this because almost every car they sold was under the CAFE but not anymore. Now they have Lexus and Acura and SUVs and the Tundra and the Ridgeline so they’re doing similar things. The free cars that those companies give away don’t suck...but it’s the same legalized scam.
