They did briefly make an arcade version of the PCE and it was pretty much an abject failure. Yeah i’ve heard of that, but thats not quite the same as what i’m thinking of... totally original arcade games that surpass retail PCE games, that wouldn’t use hucards either, the games would be on boards that could contain as many chips as you need. I would love to see what the PCE hardware would be capable of with unlimited rom space ala neo geo.

The Arcade CD-ROM2 games are pretty much what you want there, I think; just play it on something that eliminates the loading time like the SSDS3.

Fuuin Kabuki Den wasn’t an arcade port, and a couple non-arcade SuperCD ports were ACD enhanced.

But it only makes the most token use of the Arcade Card (just preloads all the game's graphics to reduce loading times) so it's not the best example of really pushing the power of the combined system, though. Maybe it'll inspire other people

Ah, I got them mixed up. You are correct. I meant to reference Kabuki Ittoryodan.

Speaking of hucard-only systems, does anyone have a GT or Express? What do you play on it if so? I can only imagine how badass it must have felt back in the 90s to have a PC Engine GT and plug it into the cigarette lighter jack in the back of a van or something. What more could you ask for? Ultimate road trip gaming.

By modern standards the screen is pretty shit, and doesn't look good at some resolutions. It's not surprising a common mod after replacing caps is a new screen. That and the battery life is, understandably, balls. At the time it was fantastic. Nowadays? More a curiosity for most I think.

To be honest, the GT sorta sucked even back in the day. The battery life was so bad that one more or less had to keep it plugged into an adaptor. Text was extremely hard to read (although still better than a Gamegear) and it couldn’t play CDs.
For the Crush games it’s fantastic. It was also very comfortable to hold, especially by today’s standards. It’s decent for other games. In the 90s though mine mainly sat around while I played Gameboy. The GB may have been a crappy little b/w POS but the library was bonkers huge and the battery life was...not as terrible don’t remember. A lot more than two hours, which was the GT average, IIRC.

Ultimate road trip gaming. I like playing lots of random stuff on it, but, naturally, some games just work better with the limited screen (I never had screen modded). Text and small projectiles (shootemups) can be wonky, of course. It really depends on the background + scrolling speed (to determine if a game gets frustrating). I have enjoyed most games on it... I can say that a majority of games are fine. I play OG Gameboy still (sadly my GameGear died years ago) and the TurboExpress/GT is literally light year's ahead of GameGear/GB when it came to the playability (fast scrolling/busy backgrounds/motion in general). Obviously, I still love GB, otherwise I wouldn't still be playing it (it's the same one I got when I was a kid), but, yes, the GT was impressive in its day. My friend had the Lynx (original model) and that was quite nice, too, as far as "games are playable and look good". I enjoy all those portable systems, still, to be honest. I am more annoyed at the original GBA lacking a backlit screen, to be honest, than any of the shortcomings of 90's portables. Even when the GB (original) was running super-low on batteries, I still played it, hoping to be able to complete stuff. Usually, fast moving stuff would kinda "dim" or nearly disappear, but you could still imagine where it was headed. This made playing Tetris possible for me, even as the battery was dying. It's kinda like "extra annoying mode" (AKA your batteries are dying mode).

The CoreGrafx, SuperGrafx, Shuttle, and GT all have a HuC6280A in them. I prefer it’s sound quality. Maybe i’m imagining it, but i think the coregrafx has better video output than the turbobooster. I always wondered why the CoreGrafx II and all the subsequent models went back to the original HuC6280...
